The diagram illustrates how pineapples are grown and then processed into different products.
Overall, the procedure comprises several steps, commencing with pineapple crowns being planted and ending with the fruit either being made into juice and canned slices or being exported. Additionally, the harvested pineapples are divided into three groups according to their size, and each group is treated differently.
Initially, pineapple crowns are planted 26 centimetres apart in temperatures ranging from 23 to 30 degrees Celsius. After 7 months, the plants are sprayed with ethylene, and it takes a further 5 months for the fruit to reach full maturity. At this point, each pineapple typically weighs 2 kilograms and measures 30 centimetres in height.
The process continues with the fully grown pineapples being washed and then sorted by size. The smallest pineapples have their crowns removed and are peeled before being put into an extractor to make juice, which is then packaged. Similarly, the medium-sized pineapples are decrowned and peeled prior to being sliced and canned. Meanwhile, the largest pineapples are coated with wax, after which they are packed into crates before being exported by ship.
