The line graph compares the proportion of city dwellers in four Asian countries between 1970 and 2020, with forecasts for 2030 and 2040.

Overall, the proportion of the population living in cities rose in all four countries between 1970 and 2020, and this upward trend is projected to continue until 2040. In addition, Malaysia had the highest figure for most of the period, whereas Thailand is expected to have the lowest in 2040.

In detail, the proportion of Malaysians living in cities was 30% in 1970, after which it rose to 76% in 2020, before it is projected to reach 83% in 2040. Indonesia's figure stood at 14% in 1970, followed by a rise to 52% in 2020 and a projected rise to 64% in 2040. It is predicted that Indonesia will remain ahead of the Philippines and Thailand throughout the forecast period.

The other two countries had lower figures. Thailand witnessed an upward trend, increasing from 18% to 33% between 1970 and 2020, and is projected to reach 50% in 2040. The Philippines stood at 32% in 1970, with a rise to 45% in 2020 and a projected final rise to 56% in 2040, although it had peaked at 48% in 1990. Both countries are likely to see their urban populations grow faster than before, according to the projections.
